DEVELOPING YOUR INSTRUMENTAL GROUP

Rehearsal Do's and Don't (Part 1)

Here is a list of things you DO NOT want to do in your rehearsal:

DO NOT hold your people accountable for what they cannot do or do not know. Train or teach them (or find someone who can).
DO NOT exhibit impatience. Patience is a virtue.
DO NOT publicly chastise a player. Instead, use random reinforcement.
DO NOT leave your position at the podium to find music for your players. Assign someone to be the "go get" person.
DO NOT use rehearsal time talking instead of playing. The players came to play and receive instruction! Give them what they want.
DO NOT bog down on one section of a piece for too long. Keep your rehearsal flowing! Plan your music far enough in advance so you can rehearse difficult sections over several weeks of rehearsing.
DO NOT lead a rehearsal without preparing beforehand. Mark scores! Look over music already marked and add/delete if necessary.
DO NOT take yourself too seriously. Remember: it's not about you; it's about Him (meaning Jesus).
