DEVELOPING YOUR INSTRUMENTAL GROUP by Steve Kirby

Literature - What is out there? (Part 1) More than you may think! Church historians tell of orchestras in
churches as early as the turn of the 20th Century. There are
several reasons why the orchestras diminished. One of the leading
causes was a lack of literature. Modern pioneers of church instrumental
music including Camp Kirkland (he's the "Godfather"
of church instrumental music) were determined to keep that from
happening again.
Tom is the Director of Instrumental Music at the First Baptist Church of Modesto and has been involved in church instrumental music for over 20 years. Tom also has many works published through Genevox and Word and has received first place in the Metro Instrumental Director Arranger's Contest. He arranges for anything from high school groups to jazz bands to large orchestras, even charts for solo instrument with rhythm section accompaniment! He will also taylor-make each orchestration to fit your group for no extra cost. You can listen to most of his catalog online (through Real Player). It's a great way to shop! |

Jeff is the Associate Minister of Music at Red Bank Baptist Church in Chattanooga and has been involved in church and Christian school instrumental music for more than 12 years. Jeff has a flare for creating "wind ensemble" sonorities through his arranging of hynmtunes. Jeff has received first place in the Metro Instrumental Director Arranger's Contest and has arrangements published through Genevox, Word and Allegis. He supplies all instrumental parts, including all standard church orchestra doublings. Jeff's arrangements work best with a medium to large group (15 +). You can listen to his arrangements on the Internet (through Real Audio). Check it out!
Jeff Anderson was the Director of Instrumental Music at Cottage Hill Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama before moving to Nashville. He teamed up with Aaron Weitekamp to form AnderKamp Music. They have also published works for another composer/ arranger by the name of Bob Burroughs! At this time, their catalog consists of brass ensembles (with lots of substitute parts and saxophones). Their latest release, "Jericho Horns Swinging", is a jazz ensemble collection of hynmtunes and children's songs. The demo album has been nominated for a Dove award! |

Omar has been a friend of instrumentalists for years. He was the Instrumental Director at the First Baptist Church in Tallahassee when he began his company. He has a flare for extended chords and big band sounds. His catalog has a variety of pieces geared toward special services (Christmas, Easter, communion, patriotic, etc.). Literature - What's out there? (Part 4)
David is one of the finest arrangers of church instrumental music today. After graduating from North Texas State, he became the instrumental director at Castle Hills Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas. Before heading to Nashville, he was the Associate Pastor/ Instrumental Music at Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, Texas for 9 years. David is now a full-time writer/ arranger and still finds time to work part-time at Judson Baptist in Nashville. You will see his name on many arrangements from Word to Allegis to Genevox and more. David developed Psalm 150 Publications while at Castle Hills. His approach was fresh, the arrangements very playable (one of my all time favorites is "The Father Loves You"). These arrangements are now distributed by the Theodore Presser Company. David completed a CD last year entitled "Great Is the Lord". It features 20 of his orchestral arrangements from various publishers. I'm listening to it as I'm writing this article. The CD is fabulous! It sells for $3.00 plus $1.00 postage. What a deal! Call or write David to order. |
