DEVELOPING YOUR INSTRUMENTAL GROUP

by Steve Kirby

Band Directors - A Valuable Resource

· Use local high school and middle school band or string instructors as a resource for instruments or music, not for players. The directors will be more defensive to you and protective of their kids. They will, however, be willing to loan instruments and music if it doesn't conflict with their programming. Target schools that have your church kids in their band or orchestra program. Your exposure at their school will reap dividends!
· Befriend a band or orchestra director in your area and volunteer to help them with no strings attached (pardon the pun). The football team has a paid coach for almost every position on the team. There is one band director and maybe one assistant (OK, I'll get off my soapbox…). Volunteer to sweep the floor, organize the library, help with uniform inventory, etc. I volunteered to sit in the press box the Monday before marching festival to critique the band. The directors need and will appreciate any help, especially help from someone with musical knowledge. They may not believe you at first! Show them your faithfulness… and God's faithfulness to you… it could lead to an opening to share the Gospel.
