CREATIVE USE OF INSTRUMENTS IN WORSHIP

by: John G. Gage

Summer, 2000

 SOLOS:
  as prelude to a hymn
as a verse in the middle of a hymn, especially under talk. Flute solo works well
obligato on last verse of a hymn- trumpet or violin work well (Baptist Hymnal Orchestra, Doug Smith books)
  as offertory
I have done a trumpet solo to enhance a point of a pastor's sermon, especially when he preached on the Second Coming
Try TAPS at a Patriotic service, with a player on stage and an "echo" player in a stairwell or balcony...is an awesome effect, especially if the echo player is in a reverberant area.

ENSEMBLES:
trumpet trio works well to accompany a hymn or do an offertory...if you don't have one, get one from a local high school or college...feature them on "God of Our Fathers" or at a Patriotic service
trumpet trio works well as unaccompanied NATIONAL ANTHEM (handout)
brass ensemble - prelude, postlude, offertory
woodwind ensemble- prelude, postlude or offertory
string ensemble- prelude, postlude, offertory
NOTE: consider using a group from a local college, a semi- pro group or community group as special guests in a service. Also consider allowing these groups to use your facilities as a practice area, opening up doors of ministry to those players
percussion ensemble-there is some good material out there!

ORCHESTRA:
prelude, offertory or postlude- we use a 30 second to 1 minute orchestra opener each AM service as the choir enters
concert at church…do an annual workshop with a guest clinician and conclude with a church concert in a PM service
concert of marches and Patrotic music in the park or outdoors at your church
away concert:
  park
  mall
  other church
  retirement center
  convention

JAZZ BAND:
combine w/college big band for a night of gospel music
accompany a guest artist in concert at your church
concert on church lawn the night before VBS to promo VBS to community
